Breast Reduction Recovery Timeline
Understanding the recovery process helps you plan your trip to Istanbul and set realistic expectations. Breast reduction is a longer operation than augmentation, but most patients are surprised by how comfortable the early recovery feels — largely because the weight they have been carrying is suddenly gone. Here is a detailed week-by-week recovery guide.
Day 0 — Surgery day
Breast reduction takes approximately 2.5–4 hours under general anaesthesia, depending on size and technique. You wake up wearing a surgical compression bra, with the skin incisions closed using dissolvable sutures and protected with surgical tapes. Most patients spend one to two nights in hospital for comfort and monitoring. Pain is generally described as mild to moderate — much of the pre-operative back and shoulder pain is already noticeably improved.
Days 1–3 — Early recovery
You return to your hotel (Antwell Suites) the day after surgery — or after two nights if a larger reduction was performed. Daily follow-up appointments are conducted at the hotel's ground-floor clinic. Most patients feel well enough to walk slowly, eat normally and manage basic self-care. If a small temporary drain was used, it is removed at this stage.
- Mild to moderate soreness — managed with prescribed medication
- Swelling and tightness across the chest — this is normal and expected
- Breasts appear square/boxy at first — this softens as swelling resolves
- Wear your surgical bra continuously, 24/7 (provided free of charge)
- No lifting above 2–3 kg — a companion is very helpful here
Days 5–7 — Flying home
Most breast reduction patients fly home comfortably on day 5–7 after a final check-up with Dr. Erdal. You receive detailed aftercare instructions, scar-care products and guidance for your home recovery. If you'd like to stay longer and explore Istanbul, you are warmly encouraged to do so.
Week 2 — Home recovery
Office work and non-physical jobs are typically manageable from day 10–14. Light housework (cooking, light tidying, low-weight grocery shopping) is fine. Avoid lifting anything heavier than 2–3 kg. Sleeping on your back (slightly elevated on a few pillows) is recommended. Most tapes are changed at around 2 weeks.
Weeks 3–4 — Gradual return to normal
Swelling continues to reduce noticeably and the square/boxy appearance begins to soften. Most patients feel significantly more comfortable and begin to see the emerging shape of their result. Light walking and gentle lower-body exercise may be resumed with Dr. Erdal's approval. The surgical bra should still be worn as directed. Scar-care (silicone tape or gel) usually begins around 3 weeks, once wounds are fully closed.
Week 6 — Returning to exercise
At approximately 6 weeks, most patients are cleared for full physical activity — including gym workouts, running and upper-body exercise. The surgical bra can typically be replaced with a supportive sports or normal bra at this point. Many patients describe this as the moment they realise just how freeing the new proportions feel.
Months 3–6 — Settling into shape
The breasts continue to "drop and fluff" — the lower pole fills out slightly as internal scar tissue softens, and the upper pole settles into a more natural slope. Swelling continues to resolve and the final shape emerges. Scars are still red or pink at this stage — this is completely normal. Photo follow-up with Dr. Erdal is scheduled at 3 months.
Months 6–12 — Final result
By 6–12 months, the vast majority of swelling has resolved and the breasts have fully settled into their final shape, softness and position. Scars gradually mature from pink to pale silver — they will continue to fade for up to 18 months. A 1-year photo follow-up with Dr. Erdal completes the formal follow-up schedule, although WhatsApp support remains available indefinitely.
What surprises most patients: the immediate relief from chronic back, neck and shoulder pain. Many women have been carrying 1–2 kg of unwanted weight on their chest for years. Having it removed — and the new lighter proportions — is often transformative from week one.
Scar care — how to get the finest line possible
Scar quality is a partnership between surgical technique and post-operative care. Dr. Erdal's role is meticulous closure; your role is:
- Wear the surgical bra exactly as instructed — no pressure on fresh scars
- Keep scars taped for the first 6–8 weeks (silicone tape or surgical tape)
- After tapes come off, apply silicone gel twice daily for 3–6 months
- Avoid direct sun exposure on scars for at least 6 months — use SPF 50+
- Do not smoke — nicotine dramatically impairs wound healing
Tips for a smooth recovery
- Wear your surgical bra as instructed — it supports healing and new breast position
- Sleep on your back, slightly elevated, for the first 3–4 weeks
- Avoid heavy lifting, pushing and strenuous upper-body movement for 6 weeks
- Stay hydrated and eat a high-protein balanced diet to support healing
- Take your prescribed medications and finish any antibiotic course
- Attend all follow-up appointments (in Istanbul and remotely)
- Having a companion for the first week is particularly valuable after reduction
- Contact Dr. Erdal's team via WhatsApp with any questions — 24/7 support
